ENGL 0001A Introduction to Composition

Prerequisite: Placement by matriculation assessment process OR completion of ENGL A, ENGL N, ESL 30C or ESL 30W with grade of "C" or better
Hours: 54 lecture
Description: Writing, reading and critical thinking skills necessary for successful completion of a four-year college program. Includes reading, discussion, and analysis of selected non-fiction texts. Writing assignments (6,500 words of formal writing) teach students to summarize, explain, analyze, synthesize, and organize information logically and to propose and defend original ideas. Instruction in research, MLA documentation and completion of a fully-documented paper using multiple sources. (C-ID ENGL 100) (CSU, UC)

Course Student Learning Outcomes:
Develop and compose appropriately clear and effective college-level writing that applies an appropriately narrowed topic, attention to purpose and audience, and basic cognitive and rhetorical modes as well as apply conventions of editing and revision to full-length essays.
Analyze and evaluate research material from multiple hard copy and online sources for credibility and legitimacy of authority through summary, paraphrase, and quotation, and apply to at least one essay.
Analyze purpose, style, organization, rhetorical and logical structure and identify common logical errors in the fiction and non-fiction prose of others, and explain arguments and biases in extended analytical written responses.
